Process - Phase One


Base Making

To make a solid base is the most important, and the most time consuming phase of this production. Through the entire process of producing Wajima-nuri, each task is executed by the skillful craftsman with years of experience. One of Wajima-Nuri's distinctive character, Nuno-kise, will be viewed by Quicktime video.(under construction)


1. Kiri-bori
Wood curving.
2. Kokuso
Filling Kokuso-lacquer on holes of the base. Let it dry.
3. Kiji Migaki
Polishing and taking a excess lacquer out.
4. Nuno-kise
Carefully coating the base with cloth soaked in lacquer. Let it dry.
5. Kisemono Kezuri
Smoothing the surface and taking a excess lacquer cloth out.
6. Soumi Tsuke
Coating a base lacquer between the cloth and the base.
7. Soumi Migaki
Polishing and smoothing the surface.
