Decoration

Finally, Urushi-ware is completed. Deeply coated Wajima-Nuri ware is already a beautiful piece of art. About 300 years ago, craftsmen started to decorate Wajima-Nuri ware with engraving pattern with gold powder. Since then, decoration method has been developed by many artists. Today we have 6 main methods to give Wajima-Nuri finishing touch. The oldest and most traditional method, Chin-kin will be viewed by Quicktime video. (under construction)


Chin-kin Process

1. Drawing
Drawing on a paper.
2. Making Transfer
Tracing the drawing with white pigment from the back.
3. Transfer
Transfering the drawing on a lacquer ware.
4. Engraving
Engraving the transfered drawing on the lacquer ware.
5. Lacquer Filling
Filling lacquer on the engraved surface of the lacquer ware.
6. Wiping
Wiping excess lacquer on the engraved surface.
7. Apply Gold Leaf
Apply thin gold leaves on the engraved surface.
8. Drying
Let it sit for a while for drying.
9. Wiping Gold leaf
Wiping out the excess gold leaves form the surface.
