A Samaritan's Purse disaster relief team is in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, helping people impacted by the ice storm that blanketed the Midwest region last week.

The storm crippled states from Missouri to West Virginia, knocking out power to more than 1.3 million homes and businesses.

Samaritan's Purse dispatched a Disaster Relief Unit to Poplar Bluff on Thursday. Our staff and volunteers are working to remove downed trees and debris.

Among the people helped so far was a single mother named Holly. She had been without power since the storm struck, and downed trees were preventing the electric company from reconnecting the power lines. A team cut up and removed the trees, making it possible for her electricity to be restored.

Power remains the most urgent need throughout the area. We have been asked to work closely with the utility company. We were provided with a list of homes where meters could not be reconnected until downed trees were removed.
