Fr. Blauvelt's Blurb

August 3rd 2009

Good morning everybody and welcome to a new month. August is here, and with it the official dog days of summer. Although these are the offical dog days of summer, I think we're doing better than the VBS week of camp. We have 90's for the next couple of weeks, but so far no heat advisories. This is a good thing because we're headed out to disc golf today.

Schedule

Today-Disc Golf. Meet at the Riemann trailer at 10:00 AM, we should be home by 6:00 PM.

Wednesday-Bible Study. 6:00 PM at the Riemann trailer.

Thursday-First Day of School for Pass Christian

Thursday-Youth Group. 6:00 PM at the office trailer. Mrs. Minna Doyle will provide the meal, we will be looking at the second commandment.

Saturday-Contemporary Service. 5:13 PM at the Riemann trailer.

Sunday-Contemplative Service. 8:00 AM at the 1st United Methodist Church

Sunday-Christian Education for Families. 9:30 AM at the Riemann trailer

Sunday-Traditional Service. 10:50 AM at the 1st United Methodist Church

This Thursday is the first day of school for the Pass Christian School District. As Fr. Colby noted during the services yesterday, he and I have been invited to come on over at 6:45 AM to help direct students in the correct direction after the come off of the buses and to greet them with good morning, and welcome to Pass Christian Scools! We appreciate this invitation and this opportunity to welcome the students on their first day in a new school.

I've given the 'student talk' several times in the past, because it is important. As the new school year begins, we all need to consider if we are students. I had a class in college where several people were highly motivated to make it into vet school, and it was very competative. We were in one of the few undergraduate classes that met at the vet school, and one day they were talking about how they would make it. Many of them knew how to "beat" tests, to get the best grade. This gets you to the next step, this helps you past where you are. Does it make you a student? Absolutely not. A student is one who desires to learn. A student learns for the joy of it. Often a student will find themselves off track of an assignment because they are interested in a parallel topic. A good student will implement this into a later paper. A disciplined student will stay on target.

Satuday I spoke about the feeding of the 4,000 and Sunday Fr. Colby spoke about Jesus as the bread of life. It was interesting to hear the theme of food come out in both sermons. We will not make it very long without eating, and if one goes too long without eating, they become pretty passionate about it. My hope as we start this new school year, is that we will become more passionate about eating from the will of God. Remember "My food," said Jesus "is to do the will of him who sent me, and to finish his work." John 4:34 (NIV) To be a student of God's Word is to desire deeply to learn more and more to have the passion that those 4000 had, to forget to eat, and to desire to learn what God's will for our lives are. Let us go out and be true students!

Have a great week!
